open market economy in turkey?

on january 24th, 1980 turkey took a revolutionary step towards transitioning its economic system into an open market economy. what were the principles required for a liberal system to flourish? how did turkey do since the decision was made 39 years ago? to what extent did turkey succeed in establishing the institutional foundations and values of a liberal economy?

during those 39 years, turkey went through military coups as well as economic and political crises, which impeded the establishment of a genuinely liberal economic system. the volatile political environment blocked the establishment of necessary institutions and the adoption of values that were of essence towards making the transition towards becoming a free market economy.

although Turkey redefined its economic institutional framework and granted an unprecedented degree of autonomy to its economic regulatory agencies, most notably the central bank, after the severe economic crisis of 2001 political expediency allowed the erosion of such autonomy in the following years. the society paid for the consequences of first the inability to institutionalize a patronage-free system and then the regression in the institutional framework established in the wake of the 2001 crisis as one crisis hit after another.

in his new documentary, 140journos investigates from a historical perspective the path that paved the way for turkey to find itself in the current state of economic crisis.
